How To Define Your Brand

Before you can think about social media channels, websites, marketing, booking your first client or selling your first product, you need to get your brand fully defined. So, what does that mean? What's in a brand?

A brand is how your company is represented to others. This includes your business name, your logo, your brand colors, the words you use, the tone you use, your brand's personality, your taglines, packaging, etc. Basically, whatever is used to create customers'  perceptions of your company.

The first tip I give clients when trying to define their brands is to think of their companies/brands as a person. You're essentially defining your ideal customer/target market and from that viewpoint, all marketing and business decisions will come to you easily.

With that in mind, here are some questions to ask yourself to help you define your brand:

  1. What does your brand do, and why?

  2. How is what you offer different/better than what your competitors offer?

  3. What are 3 deep, dark pains or challenges your ideal audience have? How do they really want to feel?

  4. How are you going to combat those pains and challenges?

  5. What does your brand look like? Is it a man, a woman, a boy, a girl, nongender? Tall, short, fat, thin, fit, unfit? Blonde or brunette? Old or young?

  6. What are your brand's favorites? Favorite colors? Top 3 brands/companies? Favorite thing to do? Favorite book/movie/song/music? Favorite food? Favorite place to hang out? Favorite city/country? You can go crazy here! The more details, the better.

  7. What does your brand hate?

  8. How would others describe your brand? What are the words they would/do use? Friendly, approachable, professional, organized, talkative, shy, extrovert, introvert, authentic, reliable, etc?

  9. What experiences (good or bad) really showed you the solution you were able to offer through your products or services?

  10. What do you want others to believe about the work you do, and the impact it has on people?

These questions are a good start to get your brain thinking about your brand in the right way. There is also a brand personality quiz that I took which I found helpful and fun: brandpersonalityquiz.com/take-the-quiz. Social Life is a Creator, a Magician and a Sage. What about you?
